MONT SUTTON... BEFORE 1960!

1955

Real Boulanger discovers a passion for skiing and think of exploiting the mountain in Sutton to keep the creamery employees busy in the Winter.

1959

François Lévesque, the family’s lawyer and Édith’s friend (Réal’s sister), advises the Boulanger in the formation of a company and in the purchase of the mountain.

The 4 Boulanger brothers, Réal, Robert, Benoît and Hercule, explore the mountain with a few experts to line out the trails, trail by trail, tree by tree. Location of 2 chairlifts (1 T-bar and 1 chairlift), a chalet and a refuge.

Réal has the vision to preserve trees on the trails to create a glade skiing concept.

IT IS MOVING FAST AT MONT SUTTON... SINCE 1960 UNTIL TODAY!

1960-1961

June 1960 : Real starts to clear some of the trails including one under a chairlift. This will be a first in Quebec in the ski industry : skiers can ski under a double chairlift!

Construction of the road from the end of the village heading to the mountain.

Construction of the main chalet.

December 17th, 1960, everything is ready for the grand opening :

  • Only the T-Bar is open;
  • A small refuge is ready at the top of the chairlift II;
  • Alt.400m : cafeteria, ski school, ski shop, rental shop and ski repair, daycare, medical clinic and patrollers are ready.

February 16th, 1961: first activity at Mont SUTTON of the Sutton Ski Club, a dinner and a first torchlight run.

1961-1962

Installation of the first snowmaking system among one of the first ski resorts in Quebec.

1962-1963

Development of a new area and installation of 2 double chairlifts, the # III and # IV

Extension of the refuge at the top of chairlift # II to create a small chalet-restaurant for a maximum of 40 people.

1964-1965

Purchase of “ski-bobs” for their rental, but they rapidly became a useful work tool for the employees working at the mountain.

1965-1966

Installation of the double chairlift # I, the longest one among the 4 chairlifts at the mountain.

1966-1967

Construction of a new chalet at the top of the chairlift # IV, Alt.840m.

1970-1971

Installation of a Poma T-bar close to the chairlift # IV to create area #IV West

Acquisition of 600 acres of land for future projects

Extension of the main chalet Atl.400m.

Certification of the trail « Stade de Slalom » by the International Ski Federation

1975-1976

Utilization of “bulldozers” to replace the snow from the side to the centre of the trails.

1978-1979

Purchase of 2 new chairlifts.

First transport of a chairlift by helicopter in Québec.

1981-1982

Purchase of a grooming machine Sno-Cats to replace the snow into the trails. Lighter and easier to drive, the grooming of the trails into the glades is easier with the Sno-Cats.

1982-1983

Inauguration of a shuttle service between the village and the mountain.

1984 à 1989

The snowmaking capacity is increasing.

1984-1985

January 1985 : addition of a double chairlift at the West of the chairlift # I, the # I West

Summer 1985 : the North America’s first Doppelmayr detachable quadruple chairlift is installed, replacing the # ll.

1985-1986

Purchase and using of a machine “trans-snow ", to improve the snow conditions into the glades.

1986-1987

Two new double chairlifts are purchased to replace the Poma of the sector # IV and the T-bar of the sector # II West.

Opening of another parking lot (Alt.520m).

1987-1988

Purchase of a second quad chairlift, the # VII.

Opening of a new area, the # VII.

1988-1989

The # lV Chairlift is replaced by a third quad, increasing the resort’s lift capacity.

Purchase of the first grooming machine Bombardier (BR).

1990-1991

Sports Experts boutique is implanted at the main chalet.

1996-1997

An old-fashioned section is created and ranked in 1998 as the best new ski area in eastern Canada by the magazine Ski Canada.

From 1999 until today, Mont SUTTON constantly innovates in order to meet growing needs of skiers and make their experience better at the station and make their overall experience absolute at the station. From the maintenance of the chairlifts to the construction of the bar, employees at Mont SUTTON invest ongoing efforts to enable a safe and enjoyable ski day.

1999 à 2002

Modernisation of the snowmaking system.

Purchase of new snow guns.

Extension of the external ticketing at the main chalet Alt.400m.

Implementation of a guest management software.

2002-2003

Construction of a new building of 6 000 square feet to house the rental shop and Sports Experts.

2003-2004

Acquisition of new Bombardier grooming machines.

Extension of the cafeteria at the main chalet Alt.400m.

Purchase of specialized ski equipment for handicapped, the adapted ski.

2004-2005

Purchase of new chairs for the chairlifts # III and # IV West.

New computer system to facilitate the transactions at the ticketing and at the cafeteria.

2006-2007

The daycare is relocated and extended.

Opening of the Bar Le Tucker.

Integrated system of cash at the ticketing and at the restaurants.

Mont SUTTON partners with Liquid Boardwear & Bern for the development of the snow park’s modules.

Implementation of the “SUTTON’d Conscience” code.

2007-2008

Acquisition of new snow guns.

Complete corporate services are offered.

New website with new tools: bulletin board, carpooling, media zone, shop online, corporate services, etc.

New free service of ambassador guides.

2008-2009

New trail : the Zero

A ventilation / air conditioning system is installed at the Bar Le Tucker.

Implementation of the Snow School following the takeover of management.

Addition of a compressor for the snowmaking system.

Replacement of the shuttle.

New programs at the Snow School.

2009-2010

Improvement of the Family Zone : complete range of facilities all located in a same area, making the family ski outings more pleasant and safer

Extension of the Bar Le Tucker with a new lounge and fireplace section

New fireplace at the chalet Alt. 680m

Investments to improve the system control of the snowmaking

Catering services on site with elaborate menus for private and corporate events

Mont SUTTON, it’s now over 400 employees and volunteers in high season, it’s an incredible visibility for the region (an average of 200 000 days / skiing over the years and different activities such as the Panoramaduodlacôte), it’s an estimated economic impact of more than 13 millions, it’s a unique ski resort in Quebec. Finally, Mont SUTTON is the story of a passionated family, which continues to develop this ski resort with a team who works every day with heart.
